What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO? When do you need which?
SEO, AEO and GEO are not the same, but they complement each other. We explain what each aims for, how it works and the order in which to approach them.
Search is no longer a single list of results. A user types a question into Google, sees an answer in a highlighted box, then asks the same question to ChatGPT or Gemini. Each of these three experiences needs your content prepared slightly differently. That is why we hear the acronyms SEO, AEO and GEO so often.
The three in short
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) aims to get your site to rank higher on search engine results pages for relevant searches. The result is a list of links and the user clicks through to your site.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) aims to be in the direct answer to a question: a featured snippet, a “People also ask” box or a voice assistant’s answer. Here it is not the whole page but a clear answer fragment inside it that is chosen.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) aims to have generative systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI summaries use your content as a source when producing an answer. Here the result is not a list but a single synthesized answer.
Same foundation, different output
What the three share: good, trustworthy, well-structured content. The difference is how the content is consumed.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output | Ranked links | One answer fragment | Synthesized answer |
| Goal | Clicks | A spot in the answer box | Being cited as a source |
| Focus | Page and site authority | Clear, short answer block | Source trust and access |
In which order should you approach them?
For most businesses the right order is:
- Build the technical foundation. Your site being crawlable, indexable and fast is a precondition for all three. AI bots must also be able to read your site.
- Plan content by intent. Extract the user’s real question and write the page that answers it clearly.
- Put the answer first. On every important page, give the answer to the question in the first paragraph, short and clear. Detail and proof come after. This is the core habit for both AEO and GEO.
- Strengthen source signals. Consistent, verifiable author, organization and contact information raises trust. Structured data (schema) makes that information explicit for machines.
- Measure. Track rankings, answer-box wins and your mentions in AI answers separately.
Common mistakes
- Treating GEO as a replacement for SEO. AI systems also draw mostly from web content. Without basic SEO work, GEO alone does not help.
- Looking for one trick for everything. Be wary of promises like “add this file, use this schema, and AI will mention you.” No one can guarantee how these systems choose.
- Deciding without measuring. AI answers vary. Look at the trend across defined question sets, not a single try.
Conclusion
SEO, AEO and GEO are not rivals but layers of the same work. Build the foundation first, make content answer-first, and finally monitor your visibility in AI systems.
